Military Experience

   After graduating from high school, Glenn Hess enlisted in the United  States Army.  He completed helicopter flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, on his 20th birthday.  Three weeks later he was in Viet Nam en route to the 1st Cavalry Division.

 

   As a combat assault pilot Glenn Hess flew a variety of missions before transferring to the 1st of the 9th Cavalry where he flew scout helicopters.  During his tour, he earned 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses and a Bronze Star.  Within weeks of his rotation date, he was shot while covering a medical evacuation mission and was awarded the Purple Heart.  He also earned 34 air medals.

 

          Upon his return to the states, Glenn Hess was assigned to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia.  His duties included a stint as an instructor pilot and as the commander’s representative at State Court proceedings.  He concluded his active duty service as the property officer responsible for all Army material and equipment at the base.

          While attending Auburn University, Glenn Hess joined the Alabama National Guard where he trained as a medical evacuation pilot.  In 1985, he separated from the Army Reserve.  He had attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 and was designated a master aviator.

          Glenn Hess has continued to serve as a veteran.  He is best known for his efforts in organizing the Bay County Veterans’ Memorial Day Observance over the last 13 years.  Under his leadership, this service has grown to be one of the best in the Southeast.
